Senior Year

coffee and chocolate from the shop where our friends

earn their spending money on the weekends

college and new friends nine months down the road

you’ll probably leave and i’ll probably stay home

in the house i’ve adopted, though it isn’t mine

and i’ll probably miss you like all of the time

nothing to forgive, afraid to forget

you’ll be somewhere between strawberries and cigarettes

you’ll start a business, or get a degree

i’ll draw a heart in chalk on the concrete

for the girl that was me and the one i’ve grown into

and hope someday you’ll learn to love you like i do

i’ll stay in this small town and learn about love

start doing the things i used to just dream of

you’ll get those tattoos and stay close with your mom

you’ll go the right way and still wonder where you went wrong

coffee and chocolate

i’ll see you again

we’ll tell each other about all our new friends

new families, new kitchens, paying off new loans,

i’ll say, “we made it,” and you’ll say, “i know.”
