The word that I am
Was first spoken fifty years ago
To this very day
And when I entered the kitchen this morning
Groggy from all those years of stumbling through life
My wife greeted me
With a truthful embrace
And with a loving smile
And asked if I felt older today
Or if anything felt different at all
Just like one would ask a young child
And immediately I blurted out without thinking
“Yes!
The sun is much closer to us
And the birds are much bigger today”
I was speaking in jest
But when I stumbled outside
A little later
To sip my morning coffee
The sun was covered by light clouds
Doing that thing where it appears as a white disk
That you can almost reach up and touch
And the birds!
Where yesterday sparrows and finches ruled the yard
Today held the Grand Assembly of Robins
And I knew right then
This is the birthday
I’ve waited for
My whole life
