Marriage Counseling – POETRY CHURCH

I don’t know about you
But it takes an act of my will
To actually hear
To truly listen to anyone
I often can’t even hear my own voice in the mirror
Nor the voice of those that I say that I love
I get lost in my own thoughts
And next thing I know
Their lips are moving
But I don’t know what they’re saying
And often I’m only thinking
Of what I want to say next anyway
This is why most
Relational counseling efforts
Start with teaching us how
To actually listen
That said
Many of us
Struggle and strain
To hear from the God
That we claim to love
But if we don’t know how to listen
And so in our frustration
We decide that
God must only speak
Through the written scriptures
And we reduce his word
To that one good book
Where we can decide upon
Our own interpretations
Maybe what we need
Isn’t more scripture quotes
Or more sermons
Maybe
It’s marriage counseling

Matt Beard is an artist most known for his paintings that portray hundreds of locations across the length of the entire California coastline. He spends weeks at a time alone in his van traveling the state and looking for new vistas upon which to plant his easel. All that time on the road has really messed with his head, and so he’s taken to writing poetry as a way to cope with his increasing anxiety about parking tickets or overnight camping violations.
