End of Trail

I’ve been trying to get here all
along

To the END

Walking a new trail is like reading
a book
Twists, turns, surprising
perspectives
Memories are summoned
Like ghosts in the wind
And I read myself into every word
Every footstep
And I just keep turning pages
And walking
Eager for the conclusion
And yet I somehow hope
The End will never come

Today I found it here

“END OF TRAIL”

The sign told me so
But not quite as clearly
As the ribbons and trinkets
Tied to the barbed wire fence
The Prayers of others
Who walked this lonely path
Before me
And I thought to myself…

“that makes sense…
that’s what people do at

the END”

So I stood and said my Prayer
In red and yellow and blue and
white
Until my back grew tired
And my hands grew cold
And my spirit was released
To wander back home
Alone

The next day I returned with my
family to share this trail with
them

To show them the END

But it wasn’t so lonely when they
were there beside me
And I didn’t think nearly so much
about Prayers

Or the END

Instead we just sat and enjoyed our
little picnic
And watched the whale spouts
Dancing like graveyard ghosts on
the horizon

Before walking
