Thinking Twice

Humboldt County
The house we call our own
Her laughter now fills this home
It defies logic and reason
And all good doctrine
It sets sharply against
The crushing weight of debt
And doubt
It ripples down the hall
Like waves that dance
On an ocean that will drown you
Without thinking twice

From the depths
I think about thirty different
things
All at once
I should have painted more
often
And maybe wrote more letters
And possibly eaten healthier foods
But then again
All things considered
Maybe not
But one thought
And one thought alone
Brings the rest to a standstill
I think of how I have loved her
laughter
Only for how it made me feel
Like all was right in my world
And I never once considered
The source of her laughter
Was a distant storm of joy
All her own
And so I make the fool’s promises
If I ever make it back to shore
I will paint more often
And write more letters
And eat a little better
But we all know
I really won’t

Just who do you think I am?

And yet I make no promise at all
To love her differently
Because I already do
